Koala faculty advisor/sponsor gave the “newspaper” $120 to help publish its latest issue

It’s hard to believe but the Koala has a faculty advisor. His name is Charles Fred Driscoll. He is a professor of Physics (click HERE for his faculty profile).

Prof. Driscoll doesn’t just “advise” the Koala. He loves this publication so much that he literally sponsored them by giving them a check of $120 to help them publish their latest issue (the Koala along with all other student media outlets were under a temporary  funding freeze after Koala editor Kris Gregorian called the BSU and their allies a bunch of ungrateful “n*$$#rs” on live UCSD television). When the SD Union-Tribune asked Prof. Driscoll why he donated money to the Koala, he responded: “I try to encourage diverse thought and exploration among students…Plus it’s tax-deductible; ain’t capitalism a bitch?”

For those of you that haven’t seen the latest Koala, I won’t post a link to it because I don’t want to contribute more “views” their page. Instead I have posted an excerpt  (see below) so that you can familiarize yourself with the kind of racially inflammatory speech that saturates this paper (esp. this latest issue which is the worst one I’ve seen in my many years here). Mind you that this was distributed to people in the midst of the racial emergency that offended so many in the last weeks. It was definitely aimed to provoke.

Prof. Driscoll: exactly how did the last issue of the Koala (that you partly paid for) encourage “diverse thought and exploration” among your students? We mean this as a sincere question. If you read this, we welcome your comments or corrections to this story. We want to hear from you. -J.F.

Does any student (besides the blogs) even read that rag? I real doubt that anyone would pay for it. I use my free copy to line my bird cage.

$120 isn’t really much of a donation from a professor.

The Koala is social satire and is meant to be funny. In this case, they are poking fun at racial stereotypes and the history of racial exploitation in this country. This is no different from, say, The Onion publishing “Major League Baseball To Retire All Black Players” or some elements of Chris Rock’s stand up routine where he plays off of racial stereotypes. In other situations, the Koala plays with ideas of murder and rape. Clearly, you wouldn’t accuse them of actually espousing those ideas. I hope you at least understand that the writers of that piece do not actually believe that UCSD should do those things. If you can accept that point, it is not that hard to then accept that this is people exercising their creativity through humor. If you know all that, and you still want the Koala out of here b/c you regard it is offensive humor, that is fine with me, but don’t attack people like this who don’t agree with you. What you are doing with this post is similar to a facist regime trying to intimidate people away from supporting a newspaper or magazine that they view as damaging to the state.

Fred Driscoll has been their faculty sponsor for the last 5 years, and contributed $120 to a general ucsd fund. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

In a broader point, with satirical media like this (e.g., Family Guy) people will laugh at some of it that doesn’t involve them, and then freak out about the stuff that does relate to them. People will write to the Onion or Seth Mcfarlane (creator of family guy) and say something like “Your stuff on murder and rape is hilarious, but don’t make fun of cancer patients b/c my sister had cancer”, or vice versa. Your reaction to this Koala article is, I believe, another example of this.

Let me tell you, this article made my morning. I almost puked up my coffee in laughter when I read this.

I love that you idiots (Union Trib included) will swallow whatever bait we give you. Does your stupidity know no bounds?

I’ve got some Arizona beachfront property to sell you. Real cheap!

I hope Mr Gregorian in his Koala will be mocking Armenian holocaust day and making fun of the starving Armenians. If not, I will know he is a hypocrite.
